According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), millions of households in the United States face food insecurity each year. This crisis can have significant effects on individual well-being and success, particularly among children and young adults.
Food insecurity can negatively impact physical health. A lack of nutritious food can lead to malnutrition, obesity, and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Mental health is also affected by food insecurity. Stress and anxiety about obtaining food can take a toll on individuals and families. The uncertainty of where the next meal will come from can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression. Over time, these mental health challenges can hinder personal development and success. (National Institutes of Health, 2024). Adults who face food insecurity often have lower job performance and higher absentee rates, which can affect their employment prospects. This cycle can perpetuate the issue of food insecurity across generations (Feeding America, 2024).
One of the main factors contributing to food insecurity is poverty. When families do not have enough money to buy nutritious food, they may have to make tough choices. The USDA reports that food insecurity rates are often higher in households with children, single-parent families, and those in certain communities. These demographics are at a greater risk, which can lead to a cycle of poverty and poor health. Englewood and the Denver area are such communities. According to the Colorado Department of Education, in 2023, over 50% of families in Englewood School District qualified for free and reduced lunches. This means this community has significant needs for individual and family food security by community organizations.
Addressing food insecurity is crucial for improving individual well-being and success and one of the most important steps that Movement 5280 takes to support a person holistically. often the first step in our door is for a warm meal. from there, we can support individuals with other resources such as mental health support, housing job Readiness Etc. Movement 5280 combats food insecurity in a variety of ways. First, we have Community meals on Sundays and Wednesdays, and along with most of our services offered such as a meal with mental health counseling or a meal served after church services. Movement 5280 also serves the community through Englewood table food pantry on Thursdays providing over 100 food boxes to households containing sustaining and nutritious items. We have provided our at-risk youth and young adults with cooking, shopping on a budget, and nutrition classes to have a continued generational impact. Movement 5280 continues to combat food insecurity in order to help individuals reach their full potential and success in life.
